It’s now only a few weeks to go before the start of Mobile World Congress 2016 in Barcelona, the world’s biggest tech event for the mobile industry. Each year MWC grows even larger, with more than 95,000 people attending last year. GSMA chief marketing officer Michael O’Hara said that he wouldn’t be surprised if attendance reached six figures this year!

With more than 2000 exhibitors the event is huge, and keynotes are expected from a large number of leading organizations. Speakers include Mark Zuckerberg, Founder and CEO of Facebook (who will no doubt mention WhatsApp, Facebook’s messaging app which has reached 1 billion monthly active users!); Guo Ping, Deputy Chairman and CEO of Huawei; and Brian Krzanich, CEO of Intel Corp. to name just a few. This year’s event promises to be packed with engaging discussion and highly innovative new products and solutions, extending well beyond the latest mobile devices (although all eyes will still be on Samsung!).

Of course all the top mobile network operators will be there including Vodafone, AT&T, China Mobile, BT and Telefonica along with leading hardware and software vendors like Amdocs, Cisco, Ericsson, Huawei, Intel, LG, and ZTE. We will expect to see all the latest and greatest in mobile network and device technologies, including the evolution to 5G, network virtualization, small cells, policy management, big data and data analytics.

With everyone talking about the ubiquitous Internet of Things (IoT), we are now looking forward to seeing even more ‘real’ applications in applied automation for smart homes and offices, connected buildings, manufacturing, transport, eHealth and eCommerce. And with companies like Qualcomm, Gemalto and Telit showcasing security, connectivity cloud and value added services for IoT and M2M (Machine to Machine), there will plenty of discussion to be had on the IoT agenda.

The Mercedes F1 team will be there with Qualcomm and their guest speaker, Lewis Hamilton the famous formula one racing driver. With major car manufacturers like Ford leading the way with connected car technology, we hope to be hearing a lot more about the advances in vehicle telematics, remote monitoring systems and especially driver assisted and driverless cars. Watch this space!!

Amongst a plethora of cool gadgets we are expecting to see are the latest in drone technology and robotics – I’m particularly looking forward to seeing the final arrival of the long awaited domestic robot that will be able to prepare and serve you dinner, do the washing up and take the bins out! But for now, just being able to check that you have locked the house and set the alarm after you have left home using your mobile phone is a good start!

Of course I will be there again this year talking to vendors and operators about their needs for content marketing, eLearning and motion graphic videos. If you are going along and would like to meet up, just drop me a line at

Mobile World Congress will be held 22-25 February 2016 at Fira Gran Via in Barcelona, with events also taking place at Fira Montjuïc. For more information about MWC 2016 take a look at the MWC Mobile World Live.
